I looked over at Mom and Dad, who were watching the movie, and tried to decide if I should tell them what was going on. No, it wasn’t worth it. I knew they’d say no. I got up and walked casually out of the room.

“Where are you going?” Mom asked.

Dang. “Out.”

“No, you’re not. You were banned from the game,” Dad said.

I pulled up the texts from Beth and handed the phone to Mom. “I can’t leave them. This is because of me.”

“You haven’t even had a chance to train, Megan.” There was a hint of panic in her voice, but I could tell she knew I was right.

“I did. This afternoon. I used this,”—I pulled the chain out and showed her the coin—“to make a wish. I trained for hours there, but only minutes passed here. I’m fine.”

Mom and Dad exchanged looks before Dad nodded. “I’ll drive you.”

“Thanks, Dad!” I ran upstairs and heard the twins begging to go. I grabbed the sword and put on my boots. I had no idea what I’d be fighting, but it would be nice to protect more than just my feet. I put on a jacket and pulled my hair up out of my face. I ran back downstairs and into the living room.

“Where’d you get the boots?” Mom asked.

“They’re from Henry. Aren’t they cool?” I zipped up my jacket and checked my phone. “Ready, Dad?”

“Let’s go.” We took his car and headed for the game. I was too nervous to talk, and Dad seemed to sense it. “Whoa.” He pulled into the high school and stopped. “What happened here? It looks like a tornado.”

“Dragons, Dad. Dragons.”

It was a mess. Trees had been pulled up, and people cowered in the bleachers. Several dragons the size of a bus were flying around, wreaking havoc on the football field. I hopped out of the car and ran to find Beth. She was helping people hide under bleachers when I got to her.

“Anything you can do about those?” She nodded toward the dragons. “They’re beautiful, but they’re causing a lot of problems.”

“Let’s hope I can stop them. So you don’t want to keep one for a pet?” I watched them circle the field.

“Maybe one of the babies. Now get up there.” Beth turned and helped a woman and her children hide.

Okay, it was time for me to do my thing—whatever that was. I needed to get up high enough to jump onto the dragons. I ran to the announcer’s box and took the stairs two at a time. I watched each of the dragons, willing one of the smallest ones to come near me. It changed its course and came straight over.

I ran and jumped on its back, holding on to a spike to get my balance. This dragon was harder to stand on. There was only room for one leprechaun in a saddle because of the spikes. I used them to pull myself forward and yanked the leprechaun off the dragon, hoping that would be enough to make the dragon leave.
